Chapter Eight - Just being close made all the difference.
A Return to Snowdon
The tale of a beloved Mums return to a place she loved dearly, as told through the eyes of a not so little boy...
Foreword
This is the telling of my Mums final return to the place she loved the most, Snowdonia.
A place we as a family spent many a happy holiday and created some of our happiest and fondest lifetime memories that we all hold dear.
Mums final request was to have her ashes spread on a hillside overlooking Llyn Padarn and Llanberis, and in the shadow of the beauty that is bestowed by the mighty
Snowdon.
That final journey is recounted in the chapters that follow on this blog page.
Also included are my own returns to Snowdon, on what are journeys of remembrance and reflection every year to remember and reflect on my Mums death on the 2nd of June, and also included will be my hopefully yearly fundraisers for charities closely linked to my Mum or the area of Snowdonia itself.
I have set up a fundraising legacy in honor of my Mum titled 'WWMD - What Would Mum Do? ... Fundraising and helping others'.
This allows me to tie in all my charity fundraising through a channel that honors my Mum and continues on in her name and memory.
This is my way of paying my respects and to help me reflect on many happy years under the caring watch of my beloved Mum.
My 1st anniversary return journey was a week in Wales with my Dad on the first week of June 2018. This enabled me to train for what would be my first memorial challenge.
As my 1st memorial fundraiser I got to do the GB Ultras Snowdon 50+ mile Ultra in Sept 2018, which had over 17,000ft of climb within it, including an ascent and decent of Snowdon itself in the early miles of the event.
As a fundraiser and a runner, to be able to combine what was my biggest, toughest and probably last big running challenge into a fitting remembrance for my Mum was ideal for me and a challenge very close to my heart.
Nowhere in the World has more relevance and personal meaning to me than Snowdon, it was the perfect and most fitting choice.
Believe it or not one of the officially organized recce runs by the organizers actually went up Snowdon on the 2nd June, which was the exact day of the first anniversary of my Mums passing!
I was able to be there where I should be, on the day I should be, doing what I should be on the 2nd June.
This meant I was able to pay my respects where my Mums ashes were spread on the day of June 2nd, despite the Ultra event being in Sept.
As said above my own return to Snowdon on the ultra in September was as a fundraiser raising funds for both the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and Lupus UK a charity that helps Lupus sufferers throughout the UK.
The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team are all unpaid volunteers putting their lives at risk daily to help loved ones come home safely and deserve our full support.
Lupus UK supports Lupus sufferers and is trying to help fund research into finding a cure for what is currently a non curable condition and the main condition that robbed my Mum of her later years...
